A bunion (hallux valgus) is a bony prominence at the base of the big toe caused by the toe drifting towards the smaller toes. When pain, difficulty with footwear, and functional limitation persist despite non-operative measures, minimally invasive surgery offers a reliable correction with smaller incisions and faster recovery than traditional open techniques.
The MICA Technique
Dr. Haidar is trained in minimally invasive bunion correction and is a member of MIFAS (Minimally Invasive Foot & Ankle Society). The MICA (minimally invasive chevron and Akin) technique uses 2–3 stab incisions of 2–3 mm to access and realign the bone with specialised burrs under continuous fluoroscopic (X-ray) guidance.
The corrected bone is held in position with small titanium screws. Because the soft tissues around the joint are minimally disturbed, post-operative swelling is reduced and patients can walk in a flat post-operative shoe from day one.
Associated deformities — such as a lesser toe correction or Akin osteotomy of the proximal phalanx — can be addressed at the same time through the same small incisions.
